This spring, ON is launching the Cloudmonster, a new model designed specifically for longer runs. The Swiss brand promises soft landings, efficient propulsion, and cushioning that’s easy on the muscles. We wanted to find out more, so we put the “Monster” through its paces. A review by Tanja Blickenstorfer.
First impression – A rocker design that takes some getting used to
Even though the name sounds outrageous, after some initial skepticism, the shoe turns out to be a reliable companion on longer runs. When putting them on, they feel a bit wobbly. The “rocker” with its distinctly rounded toe box is actually quite pronounced. The fit is rather roomy in the front, which is unsettling at first. The upper material is very thin and breathable, and thanks to the half-sock construction, the shoe feels pleasantly snug around the midfoot.

The Run – The Monster Gets Rolling
After just a few steps, that wobbly feeling disappears immediately; the roomy toe box is no longer noticeable, and the shoe is genuinely fun to run in. It takes some getting used to the rocker and the higher sole construction, but by the time the first signs of fatigue set in, your running style will benefit from the excellent cushioning and the “roll-off assistance.” Even tired legs move forward dynamically, and the impact is significantly reduced. It should be clearly noted, however, that the “Cloudmonster” works best on asphalt. The shoe only withstood a trip to the gravelly Verzasca Valley to a limited extent. The high rocker design led to increased instability on uneven terrain.

Bottom line – This shoe really packs a punch
Despite initial reservations, the new model is a very pleasant surprise. Especially on long runs on asphalt, you feel energized for longer; heel strikers in particular notice the comfortable cushioning and need less energy to push off. Your muscles will thank you, and you’ll feel fresher than usual even the day after a long run. We’re convinced, and we could keep running like this for a long time—as long as you stick to asphalt.

Evaluation
+ Cushioning – Doesn't fit every foot
+Lightweight -Mainly suitable for asphalt
+Rocker / Efficiency
